SHARED PRACTICES

Fun, safe and fair play

Playing and training at BCB is enjoyable and affordable. These guidelines help keep it that way.

SHUTTLES – read this guidance carefully

At adult sessions, every player brings two new feather shuttles of speed 78. The shuttles must be of a quality and have flight characteristics suitable for normal club play. Shuttles approved by Badminton Finland or the BWF are a good choice. Plastic shuttles, clearly damaged shuttles or shuttles with poor characteristics do not meet the requirement.

  • Shuttles are shared during the session. The aim is to distribute shuttle costs fairly so that the same players do not continually pay for other people’s play.
  • Place the shuttles at the base of any net post at the beginning of the session.
  • After play, unused shuttles may be divided among the players. Used shuttles are collected for club training.
  • Shuttles can be purchased from Seppo and Markku (Markku H). They are club shuttles.
  • If a player does not bring the required shuttles, the club may charge its approved shuttle fee. The fee must be paid by the due date. The right to attend adult sessions may be suspended until an unpaid shuttle fee has been paid.
Shuttle care and storage

Dry feather shuttles can last longer when their moisture is carefully restored with steam.

  • Open the shuttle tube at both ends.
  • Hold the tube above steam with the feathers facing down for about 30–45 seconds.
  • Close both ends of the tube. The effect becomes noticeable only after a few days.
  • New shuttles may also be steamed if they have dried out. New shuttles in good condition do not need steaming.
  • Do not store shuttles in a bag on underfloor heating. Do not keep them in a freezer or another excessively cold place.
  • Lift and handle the shuttle by the cork. Do not push it into the tube by the feathers.
PLAYING – fair court time

Everyone should receive roughly equal playing time. Players rotate after games. A game is played to 21 points, with extension if required. If Badminton Finland changes the official scoring system, the club practice will be updated in line with the federation’s guidance.

  • When a game ends, check whether anyone is waiting and offer them a place.
  • The same four players should not continue without a break while others are waiting.
  • Everyone should receive a fair share of playing and resting time.
  • This does not apply to players who are separately preparing for competitions outside the club.
COACHING

No regular adult coaching has been planned for autumn 2026. Coaching may be arranged if there is sufficient interest. Additional training days may also be organised if enough people register. Ask the club separately.

Take an active part whenever coaching is arranged. Remember: playing maintains your skills, but practice helps you improve. Badminton becomes more enjoyable as your ability develops.

BADMINTON ETIQUETTE
  • Be polite and encouraging on court.
  • You may laugh at your own mistakes, but not at a partner’s or opponent’s mistakes.
  • Do not advise another player unless asked. Suggest tactical changes constructively and do not give orders.
  • New players are gladly advised when they ask for help.
  • Thank your partner and opponents after the game.
  • Keep your emotions under control.
  • Do not deliberately hit dangerous shots towards the face of a player close to the net.
  • Badminton is a fun activity. Let us keep the atmosphere cheerful and positive.
SAFETY
  • Warm up before playing or rally sufficiently before the game begins.
  • Coaching teaches correct techniques that help prevent injuries.
  • Eye injuries can be serious. Avoid hard shots towards the face of a player at the net and consider protective eyewear, even without prescription lenses.
  • Do not leave bags, shuttle tubes or clothing close to the courts. Move them to the back wall or equipment storage area.
  • Do not walk across the court area while play is in progress and do not wait too close to a court.
  • The club does not insure players. We recommend personal accident, medical or other suitable insurance.
EQUIPMENT
  • Use non-marking indoor shoes with sufficient grip and support.
  • Bring the feather shuttles described above. Shuttles approved by Badminton Finland or the BWF are a good choice.
  • Rackets have different characteristics: head-heavy rackets suit attacking play, balanced rackets suit all-round play, and light rackets suit defence and precise placement.
  • Choose a racket that suits your style, strength and hand. A racket that is too heavy can increase strain and injury risk.
  • Very inexpensive rackets costing under 70 euros do not usually meet the needs of an active club player. Ask for advice before buying.
  • Bring a water bottle, suitable sports clothing and, if needed, a towel.
  • Club members are happy to advise on rackets and other equipment.
COMPETITION

The club organises its own internal competitions. Puulaaki events have been held in May, and new competitions may also be arranged.

  • Entering open competitions is a good way to meet new partners and opponents.
  • Competitions are organised for players at different levels. Recreational events may, for example, include classes starting at beginner level.
  • Competitions are available for different age groups from juniors to seniors.
  • Official competitions require a Badminton Finland player licence. It may also be possible to purchase player insurance in connection with the licence.
  • Competing is an enjoyable way to represent the club and also supports club activities.
  • Ask the club, Lasse or Markku (A) about competitions.
Now it is time to play!
