Shared responsibilities of players, guardians and coaches

By taking part in BCB junior activities, the player and guardian agree to follow these rules and the club’s other safety and operating guidance.

1. Purpose
  • These rules apply to BCB junior practices, competitions, events, playing trips and club communication groups.
  • Every junior has the right to a safe training environment, appropriate treatment, encouragement and the opportunity to learn at their own level.
  • Every participant must act in a way that allows others to take part safely and with a positive experience.
2. Attending practice
  • The player arrives on time, uses suitable training equipment and reports an absence whenever possible.
  • The player attends only when healthy and in a condition that makes participation safe. A player must not attend with a fever, a contagious illness or when an illness or injury prevents normal training.
  • For safety reasons, a coach may prevent a player from taking part or stop their participation if the player’s health does not allow safe training.
  • The player looks after their own equipment and helps set up and collect shared equipment as instructed by the coach.
3. Conduct and safety
  • Everyone is treated kindly and respectfully. Bullying, discrimination, ridicule, threats, harassment and violence are prohibited.
  • Everyone is given space to practise. Instructions from the coach concerning safety and the organisation of the session must be followed.
  • Rackets, shuttles, nets and other equipment are handled safely. A racket or other item must not be thrown or used to frighten anyone.
  • Playfulness and a cheerful atmosphere are welcome, but they must not endanger safety, disrupt practice or hurt another person.
4. Fair play and consideration for others
  • The player encourages others, accepts different skill levels and practises with the partners assigned by the coach.
  • Wins, losses and personal mistakes are handled appropriately. Opponents, partners, coaches, umpires and officials are respected.
  • The player tells the coach if they notice bullying, harassment or other inappropriate conduct.
5. Phones, photography and social media
  • Phones are kept silent and put away during practice unless the coach gives permission to use them.
  • Other people must not be photographed, and images, videos or information about them must not be published without permission. Photography in changing rooms is prohibited.
  • Club communication groups and social media must be used appropriately. Online bullying connected with club activities may be treated as a breach of these rules.
6. Role of the coach or instructor
  • The coach or instructor is responsible for delivering a safe, planned session that is suitable for the juniors’ age and skill level.
  • The coach or instructor treats every junior equally, fairly and respectfully and gives feedback constructively and encouragingly.
  • The coach or instructor must not bully, humiliate, discriminate, threaten or use inappropriate language, and must not favour or punish a player because of personal relationships, background, skill level or another improper reason.
  • The coach or instructor maintains a physically and psychologically safe atmosphere, addresses inappropriate conduct consistently and takes concerns raised by a junior seriously.
  • The coach or instructor has the right to lead the session, assign groups and partners, and give safety and organisational instructions. This authority must be used appropriately and fairly.
  • Inappropriate conduct by a coach or instructor may be reported to the junior coordinator, the chair of the board or another responsible person designated by the club.
7. Role of the guardian
  • The guardian reviews the rules with the junior and supports them in following the rules.
  • The guardian behaves appropriately at practices, competitions and in communications and respects the working environment of coaches and other volunteers.
  • Unclear or concerning matters should first be discussed with the coach, junior coordinator or board, not in public group discussions.
8. Responding to breaches of the rules
  • The primary purpose of intervention is to help the junior correct their conduct and continue participating safely in the group.
  • Depending on the seriousness and repetition of the conduct, measures may include a verbal reminder, a short calming break, a discussion, contact with the guardian, a written warning, a temporary suspension or ending participation.
  • Measures do not always need to follow the same order. In a serious safety, violence, threat or harassment situation, a stricter measure may be taken immediately.
9. Removal from a practice session
  • A coach may stop a player from taking part in an individual session if the player endangers safety, bullies or threatens someone, deliberately damages equipment, prevents the session from being delivered or repeatedly refuses to follow instructions.
  • A minor is not left alone without appropriate supervision. The guardian is contacted when necessary, and a safe journey home is arranged.
  • The guardian is informed as soon as possible if a player has been removed from a session.
10. Temporary suspension
  • A repeated or serious breach may result in a temporary ban from one or more practices, competitions, events, a particular group or all club junior activities.
  • The decision is made by the BCB board or a responsible person specifically authorised by the board.
  • Before the decision, the player and guardian are told what has happened and are given an opportunity to present their view. The decision and its reasons are provided in writing.
  • A temporary interim suspension may be imposed while the matter is investigated when this is necessary for safety.
11. Ending participation in junior activities
  • Participation may be ended if serious or continuing inappropriate conduct does not improve, the player repeatedly endangers other people’s safety or the conduct substantially disrupts the group’s training.
  • The decision is made by the BCB board. The player and guardian are given an opportunity to be heard before the decision, and the decision and reasons are provided in writing.
  • Ending participation in junior activities does not automatically terminate membership of the association. Any removal from membership is considered separately under the BCB rules and the Finnish Associations Act.
12. Fees
  • Refunds of membership, training and other fees are governed by BCB’s current payment and cancellation terms.
  • A temporary suspension does not normally entitle the participant to a refund. The board decides case by case whether an adjustment is reasonable.
13. Reporting a concern
  • Bullying, harassment, violence, inappropriate conduct by a coach or instructor, or another concern may be reported to the coach, junior coordinator, chair of the board or another responsible person designated by the club.
  • A report concerning a coach or instructor does not need to be made to the person concerned.
  • Reports are handled as confidentially as possible. No one may be treated inappropriately because they reported a concern.
14. Commitment to the rules
  • By taking part in BCB junior activities, the player and guardian agree to follow these rules and the club’s other safety and operating guidance.
  • The rules are reviewed with juniors at the beginning of the season and kept available to players and guardians in MyClub.
  • The BCB board approves and, when necessary, updates these participation terms.

If the rules are not followed

The coach first helps the player correct their conduct and makes sure the session is safe. When necessary, the player may be asked to take a short break, removed from the session or invited to a discussion together with the guardian. Serious or continuing inappropriate conduct may result in a temporary suspension or participation in junior activities being ended.
